Shopping Cart
What is a Shopping Cart?
A shopping cart is a feature used in e-commerce software that allows visitors of a website to select products and services for potential purchase. It is designed for the convenience of customers, enabling them to add items they wish to buy and manage them before placing an order. By clicking the “Add to Cart” button, a customer places a product into a dedicated holding area, from which they can proceed to complete their purchase.
The shopping cart serves as an intermediate step between browsing and buying. It stores data about the items a customer intends to order and allows them to manage their selection — adding or removing products, adjusting quantities, or changing product specifications — all before proceeding to checkout.
On a website, the shopping cart is typically represented as an icon in the navigation area. Clicking the icon reveals the stored items selected for purchase. The cart also displays the cost of each item and any applicable taxes, giving customers a clear summary before completing their transaction.
