MICR Number Method

The MICR Number Method refers to the use of Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) technology in banking to process and verify cheques efficiently. MICR uses special magnetic ink and standardized fonts to print numbers and characters on financial documents so that they can be read by both machines and humans.

This technology helps banks automate the cheque clearing process by allowing specialized scanners to quickly read encoded information printed on the document.

How MICR Works

In the MICR system, characters are printed using magnetic ink or toner in a specific typeface. These characters are typically located in a strip at the bottom of a cheque. When the cheque passes through a MICR reader, the machine detects the magnetic signals and converts them into digital information.

This process allows financial institutions to identify key details such as the bank branch, account number, and routing information required for payment processing.

Structure of the MICR Code

MICR codes are commonly presented as a sequence of digits and special symbols that represent important banking information. In many banking systems, the code consists of nine digits divided into groups that identify the financial institution and branch.

In addition to numbers, the MICR line may contain special characters used for transaction identification, including symbols representing routing numbers, account numbers, and cheque numbers.

MICR Fonts

Two primary fonts are used in MICR technology:

  • E-13B: Widely used in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia.
  • CMC-7: Commonly used in many European countries.

The CMC-7 format uses a sequence of 15 characters, including numbers and special symbols, and relies on a barcode-like structure with spaces between characters.

Advantages of MICR Technology

  • High accuracy: Magnetic characters reduce reading errors during cheque processing.
  • Fast processing: Banks can automatically scan and process large volumes of cheques.
  • Security: The magnetic ink helps prevent fraud and document tampering.
  • Machine and human readability: The characters can be interpreted both visually and electronically.
